Lesson 2 of 12

Lesson 2

Close, Calm, and Familiar

How to help your baby settle using your presence, soft boundaries, and a familiar scent.

There are evenings when a baby seems physically restless: their arms flail, they accidentally startle themselves, and each sudden movement seems to make them cry harder. In moments like these, a busy day or fatigue can leave your baby feeling a bit overwhelmed by the open space around them.

Offering your baby a clear sense of closeness, soft physical support, and the familiar scent of home can help them feel grounded again.

Illustration: a parent stands in a lamp-lit nursery holding their baby upright against their chest, one hand cupping the head and the other supporting the back. Their cheek rests lightly against the baby's head, and the baby is asleep in a soft polka-dot sleepsuit.
Upright, chest to chest, in a sweater that already smells of home.
